  Word of a scandalous nature has spread throughout French society, and to many of those in connection with it, that the Comtesse Claire Durant - young widow of the Comte Edouard Durant - has neither been seen or heard of since the fortnight following her late husband's wake and burial. Some of the more vile gossip suggests that such an act amounts to a confession of guilt, while those of a more polite persuasion only allude to the presence of deadly nightshade found to be growing abundantly in the estate gardens.
  
  It has been common knowledge for some time among society that prior to their marriage, the Comtesse Durant was better known as one Mlle. Claire Faucher, a tutor to the Comte's nephews and a woman of uncertain pedigree. Conversation now often centers on the widow Durant's questionable heritage, as well as on the considerable inheritance that accompanied her in her disappearance.

  It would not be a difficult act to discover the stream of young women whom can be seen entering Madame Durant's private suite at night on occasion, nor to note that after leaving, not one seems to return again. The true challenge would be to deduce the nature of these one-time visits, with each ending in such an anonymous, abrupt manner. Of course, this is nothing out of place, considering the establishment it occurs in.
  
  Even more puzzling is that when no such guests are to be seen, instead this curious woman can be found wandering into the dangerous wilderness of Guildereim by moonlight, returning in secrecy some hours later. A strange pass-time for a woman of her station, to be sure.
